OpenOffice opening MS Word documents

Post by boonera » Mon Feb 08, 2016 4:22 pm

I use Open Office 4.1.2, and recently installed windows 10. I have been finding my that Microsoft Word documents are getting saved&opened by Open Office whether I like it or not. Have tracked it down: Open Office somehow became the default program for opening Microsoft Word documents, though oddly, not Microsoft Word 97-2003 documents. specifically, open office is the default to open ".docx". the "Set Program Associations" box lists .docx Microsoft Word documents as an "unknown application". I'm creating documents in Word 97-2003, but somehow they're morphing from .doc to .docx

unfortunately, when I try to click the icon to deselect open office as the default for Microsoft Word .docx documents, nothing happens. perhaps this is a windows 10 rather than open office problem. my paranoia tells me it's probably part of microsoft nudging me toward paying them a yearly subscription for their new office suite (the set program associations box currently doesn't even list microsoft word!!). but

suggestions still would be welcome. I did just discover that I can go to an individual file and change the program that opens it, but it would be nice if I could change the overall default settings.
